THE STORY: The Lakers, a sterling 13-2 at home, have yet to solve their road woes, dropping to 5-11 after a 102-90 loss at Phoenix on Sunday. The Lakers face Portland on Monday at home, where they have beaten the Blazers seven of the last eight times. Portland is coming off one of its best performances of the season in a 97-77 victory over Atlanta. LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 10 rebounds after missing two games with an injured left ankle.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (17-15): While Portland was happy to see Aldridge, it was guard Raymond Felton who had one of his best games. He scored 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting and had eight assists in 33 minutes. “I liked that he was aggressive,” coach Nate McMillan said. “That is what we are looking for from him. We know he can do it. … He looked pretty loose. It was good to see his shot fall and get some confidence there.”

ABOUT THE LAKERS (18-13): Pau Gasol has said if he gets traded is out of his hands, but Kobe Bryant voiced his opinion after losing to the Suns. “It’s just tough for a player to give his all when you don’t know if you’re going to be here tomorrow,” Bryant said. “I’d rather them not trade him at all but if they’re going to do something, I wish they would just … do it.” Bryant scored 32 against the Suns, Gasol had 17 and Andrew Bynum 16, but the Lakers got only two points from Metta World Peace and none from Derek Fisher.

The runaway leaders of the Spanish La Liga are listed as massive -250 favorites on the soccer betting odds to open their Round of 16 series with a road victory over the underdog Russian side (+700) with draw odds of +330. Earnhardt Jr. did at least manage to get back into the Chase in 2011 despite the lack of wins – it was the first time he’d made it into the Chase since 2008, ending up in 25th place in 2009 and 21st place in 2010.

Overall Dale Jr. picked up four Top-5 results and 12 Top-10 finishes in 2011 en route to a seventh-place finish in the Sprint Cup Series driver standings; he ended up 113 points behind championTony Stewart at the conclusion of the 2011 Chase.

THE STORY: The Detroit Pistons are playing only .333 basketball, but are on a 7-2 run as they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. The Pistons were in contention for the league’s worst record a couple weeks ago, but now are five games behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Likewise, the Cavaliers continue to surprise despite a rash of injuries. They are 2-2 without center Anderson Varejao and enter Tuesday two games behind the Celtics.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (11-22): The Pistons have the same record through 33 games as they did at this point last season, but the mood surrounding the team is completely different. Winning helps, but Brandon Knight is evolving into a complete player while learning the role of point guard on the fly. Knight has scored 38 points in his last two games and has teamed with Rodney Stuckey to give the Pistons what could be a solid backcourt for years to come.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (12-17): While top pick Kyrie Irving grabs all the attention, Tristan Thompson is slowly emerging after the Cavaliers selected him fourth overall last summer. Thompson sprained the same ankle twice within weeks of each other, but said he is healthy. While coach Byron Scott said Thompson isn’t ready to start yet, he posted his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in Sunday’s win over the Kings. Now all he has to do is fix that woeful 46 percent free throw percentage.

THE STORY: The Indiana Pacers are coming off their largest winning margin in nine seasons and look to stretch their winning streak to three games when they host the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday. Indiana routed the Charlotte Bobcats 108-73 on Sunday and the 35-point victory was the franchise’s best since a 51-point victory over the Chicago Bulls during the 2002-03 campaign. ABOUT THE HORNETS (7-24): Second-year point guard Greivis Vasquez has taken advantage of an opportunity to start and is in the midst of a productive month. Vasquez has started eight of New Orleans’ 10 games in February and is averaging 12.9 points with seven double-digit games. He had 15 points in Monday’s loss to Oklahoma City and has two 20-point outings during the stretch. Vasquez became the starter when Jarrett Jack injured a knee. Jack scored 18 points off the bench against the Thunder.

ABOUT THE PACERS (19-12): Indiana is on the verge of getting back guard George Hill, who has missed the last 11 games with a chip fracture in his left ankle. Pacers coach Frank Vogel said he expects Hill to push both point guard Darren Collison and shooting guard Paul George and possibly supplant one of them as a starter. Hill was acquired from the San Antonio Spurs in the off-season and averaged 9.3 points prior to the injury.

THE STORY: The Miami Heat are rolling right along – all the way up to the best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference. The Heat have won six straight – each by at least 12 points – and have their two superstars playing at the top of their respective games. Dwyane Wade has shot better than 50 percent from the floor in each of the last 10 games and LeBron James is shooting 62.3 percent over the last four. Next up Tuesday is the visiting Sacramento Kings, who have dropped five in a row. The Kings have allowed 111.2 points during the slide.

ABOUT THE KINGS (10-21): Sacramento is in the midst of a six-game road trip that will take it into the All-Star break. Despite close calls at Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland, the Kings have not been able to break through at the end of games. The roughest ending came Sunday, when DeMarcus Cousins gave Sacramento a lead with 2.9 seconds left at Cleveland. But Tyreke Evans committed a foul with 0.4 seconds left and the Kings ended up with a 93-92 loss. Sacramento has surrendered at least 93 points in 14 of its last 15 games and ranks last in the NBA in scoring defense.

ABOUT THE HEAT (25-7): Looking to take advantage of Sacramento’s sieve-like defense is Miami, which is second in the NBA in scoring at 103.3 points. The Heat are shooting just under 50 percent as a team during their winning streak and had put up at least 105 points in each game until “slumping” to a 90-78 victory over Southeast Division rival Orlando on Sunday. James, Wade and Chris Bosh have each gotten plenty of rest during the winning streak, with big leads allowing for plenty of fourth-quarter rest. Wade has touched 30 minutes only once in the last five.

ABOUT THE SABRES (25-27-7): Buffalo trails the Islanders by one point in the Eastern Conference standings and is playing the third of a four-game homestand. The Sabres disposed of the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2 on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak. Derek Roy netted two goals and has five points in three games, one more than his point total from his previous 19 contests. After Tuesday’s tilt with the Islanders, Buffalo hosts the Boston Bruins on Friday before embarking on a five-game road trip with stops in New York to play the Rangers, Anaheim, San Jose, Vancouver and Winnipeg.

OVERTIME:

1. The Islanders have the worst goals for/against differential in the Eastern Conference (minus-35). Only the Columbus Blue Jackets have a worse differential in the NHL (minus-59).

THE STORY: Earlier this month, New Jersey Devils netminder Martin Brodeur said he would like to return for at least one more NHL season. The way the all-time wins leader has played in February, that seems like a no-brainer. New Jersey surged past the Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins with an 8-1-1 surge that has included victories over both Pennsylvania teams, and a pair of triumphs over the Atlantic-leading New York Rangers.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (29-24-6): It remains unclear what Toronto plans to do heading into Monday’s trade deadline, but it’s safe to say general manager Brian Burke expected to have at least one significant deal made by now. With his club fighting for its postseason life, ther may be even more pressure on Burke to make whatever deal he can to improve his sagging club over the final playoff push. Goaltending and defense have been a major concern of late, with Toronto surrendering 28 goals over its last seven games.

OVERTIME:

1. The teams have split a pair of meetings this season, with the road club winning both times.

2. Jonas Gustavsson will get the start in goal for the Maple Leafs. He is 3-1-0 with a 2.65 goals against average in five career games against New Jersey.

3. Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk has been sensational in February with five goals and 12 assists in nine games. That gives him 58 points in 53 games – two fewer than he had in 81 contests a season ago.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (38-14-5): New York won for the fifth time in six games as Derek Stepan scored 22 seconds into overtime in Sunday’s 3-2 home win over lowly Columbus. The Rangers arrive in Pittsburgh having allowed a league-low 116 goals and sporting the NHL’s best road record at 19-7-3. Artem Anisimov also scored against the Blue Jackets, giving him four goals in his last eight games. Anisimov has scored seven goals in 15 career games against Pittsburgh.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (33-21-5): Following a big win at Philadelphia, the Penguins laid an egg in a 6-2 loss the following day at Buffalo. Center Jordan Staal has scored a goal in three straight games and four of five since returning from injury. He has six points during that stretch. Evgeni Malkin continues to lead the league in scoring, but has gone without a goal for three straight games – his longest drought since a five-game span at the end of December.

OVERTIME:

1. Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is 8-0-1 with three shutouts in his last nine games.

2. The Penguins have allowed a pair of first-period goals in five of their last seven games.

3. The teams have split two meetings this season, with each winning away from home. That continues a trend in the series in which the road team has won 11 of the last 13.
